Southland Development Authority (SDA) Collaborates with Harvey Housing Initiative (HHI) for Community Home Improvement Project

HARVEY, Ill. – May 16, 2022 – Southland Development Authority (SDA), the Harvey Housing Initiative, and the City of Harvey have agreed to revamp various homes in and around the city for those seeking affordable housing. The project is estimated to cost $2.1 million.

Harvey, Illinois, is a city located in Cook County in the Chicagoland area, approximately 20 miles south of Chicago, it has a diverse population and is home to over 30,000 people. Historically, Harvey experienced significant growth in the post war years, particularly in the early 1950s and 60s. However, Harvey faced economic challenges due to restructuring in steel and manufacturing industries, leading to a decline in jobs and population from its peak in 1980. This historical backdrop of both prosperity and challenge sets the stage for the latest initiative.

The City of Harvey’s top priority is creating a comfortable, safe, and affordable environment for residents. The Home Improvement Agreement aims to provide affordable housing and to return abandoned homes to tax paying status.  The agreement is also designed to increase job prospects and create further educational opportunities for young people.

The scope of the work on the houses is extensive and varies by house. Potential projects include complete rehab of interior rooms, repair or replacement of porches, landscaping of backyards, and other improvements. High-speed Internet service and other amenities are included in the finished home for only $15 per month for continuous service if the homeowner agrees to a  year-long contract.

The Harvey Housing Initiative is a partnership between Metro Alliance and the SDA. The partnership, HHI, was developed in 2022 to move abandoned and tax-delinquent properties to affordable housing.  To learn more about the partnership, please visit the SDA Website.
